The NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat led by the Chief Executive Officer, Amb. Dr Samori Okwiya accompanied by Public Relations and Communications Manager, Mr. Frankline Kaburu today paid a courtesy call to Mr. Omae Nyarandi the Executive Secretary Northern Corridor Transit Transport Coordination Authority, to discuss development projects as well as accelerate the development of the LAPSSET Regional Mechanism. In attendance were, Prof. Lievin Chirhalwirwa – Infrastructure Development and Management Program, Emmanuel Imaniranzi, Director Transport Policy and Planning, Elias Leju Leonardo, Director Monitoring and Evaluation and Jean Ndayisaba – Communication and Public Relation Specialist.

The main objective of the visit was to establish strategic partnership with the Northern Corridor Development in relation to the core mandate of the NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat which serves as an operational coordinating secretariat on the implementation of AUDA-NEPAD priority programs and the African Peer Review Mechanisms.

Among the issues discussed were roles of Northern Corridor in accelerating development through creating transport linkages in the landlocked countries of Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and Burundi to Kenya’s Maritime Port of Mombasa. Notably, The Northern Corridor Integration Projects initiative are designed to generate sustainable political will necessary to fast track the implementation of the projects identified such as the LAPSSET corridor project.

Amb. Dr. Samori Okwiya, NEPAD/APRM Kenya Secretariat Chief Executive Officer remarked on the critical role that the Secretariat plays in fostering and accelerating regional economic development and growth through trade facilitation.  Particularly, he emphasized on the LAPSSET regional mechanism that is currently championed by the Secretariat and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the various important lessons that the proposed mechanism may draw from the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority.  The CEO also discussed the areas of synergy that the two institutions can work on especially on matters pertaining to capacity building on areas such as eco-driving practices that promote the climate change agenda as well as areas on clean energy.

In his sentiments, the, Executive Secretary Northern Corridor Transit Transport Coordination Authority, Mr. Omae Nyarandi welcomed the proposed working relationship between the two institutions and assured of his unwavering support especially in the development of the proposed LAPSSET regional mechanism.

In conclusion, the two institutions agreed to collaborate with the NCTTCA to facilitate different projects aimed at improving logistics to East and Central Africa.
